I AM MY MOTHER’S MOTHER
A memoir of reincarnation
This is an intergenerational story of motherhood, set in Colorado and Cambodia.
I’ve been writing this book all of my life, but it wasn’t until my son’s early birth did the story feel complete. Writing these pages has been a spiritual reckoning. This is a book for mothers, immigrants, and children of war.

This memoir explores three generations of women and ghosts as they navigate hope and uncertainty in Cambodia and America.
About the book
When I was six, my mother told me that I was the reincarnation of her mother. She and my aunt were the lucky ones who survived the Killing Fields in Cambodia, making their way to America. For the women I was always closest with, especially my mom and aunt who helped raise me, lines were blurred between shamanic cultural beliefs, PTSD, and mental illness. When I went into labor with my son three months early, my mother told me my son was the reincarnation of my late uncle - a famed Cambodian Freedom Fighter. Within these pages, I explore how to survive in this lifetime if I am truly my mother’s mother.
